Son of Archibald Oswald and Ruby Millicent Carlill, of Punchbowl, New South Wales, Australia..

On 21 June 1944 Ronald took off from RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire on board an Avro Lancaster III, serial number ED532, markings PO-H Australia. Takeoff was at 23:02 hrs for a bombing operation against the synthetic oil plant at Scholven-Buer.

The aircraft was intercepted by Hauptmann Ernst-Wilhelm Modrow & Unteroffizier Erich Schneider of the 1./NJG 1, who had taken off from Venlo airfield (the Netherlands) at 00:43 hrs in Heinkel He 219 A-0 G9+AH.
