Francis played for Strathclyde and Albion Rovers before signing for Chelsea in August 1905, playing 3 games and scoring 3 goals in our 1st ever season.
He returned to Albion Rovers before playing for Bathgate, Wigan Town, Birmingham, Pendlebury and Royal Albert, hanging up his boots we believe at the end of 1908.

Returning to Coatbridge, Francis and his brother Owen were well known and 'colourful' characters in the town, being frequent visitors in front of the local beak according to contemporary newspaper reports.

At the outbreak of WW1 Francis, Owen and brother Michael enlisted in the Highland Light Infantry. He had previously lied about his age and served with the HLI in the S African war, and Owen also had prior military service.
Brother Owen was captured in France in late 1914 and was held as a POW by the Germans for the remainder of the war.
Francis was shipped to Gallipoli where he was KIA on 12 July 1915, he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
Brother Michael was KIA on 6 August 1916 and is buried in Dartmoor Cemetery, France.
