The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Letcher C. Compton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as Intelligence Officer, 1st Battalion, 140th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, A.E.F., near Charpentry, France, 27 and 28 September 1918. Lieutenant Compton exposed himself to heavy machine-gun fire to advance ahead of his battalion for the purpose of locating accurately the enemy's positions. His repeated reconnaissances secured valuable information for his battalion commander. Lieutenant Compton was killed while making a reconnaissance south of Exermont.
