Corporal John I. "Ivan" Bales, born in Greenville, TN 14 Oct 1895, was the son of Johnathan Henry Bales and Sarah Margaret (Pickering) Bales. In the 1900 census 4 year old John is living with his parents and siblings George R 2 and Sylva M 1 in district 16 of Greene County, TN. His father was farming. In the 1910 census 14 year old John is living with his parents and siblings George R 12, Sylva M 11, William C 8, Dellie M 6, and Annie R 4, still in Greene County, TN. His father is still farming. His mother is a seamstress. John is a farm laborer.

At the time of his 1917 draft registration he was employed as a farm hand by Russell Lines of Clarinda, Iowa (there are still Lines listings in the Clarinda, Ia, white pages). He resided at Braddyville, Iowa. Braddyville is on the Nodaway River at the Missouri state line 119 miles north of Kansas City. Clarinda is 11 miles due north of Braddyville. I think the year is wrong on this soldier and should be 1919. The 88th Division, formed in Sep 1917, didn't even start moving from Camp Dodge, Iowa, to Europe until 25 Jul 1918. If he died in March 1919 it was probably from the third wave of the Spanish Flu. The Des Moines Tribune and the Davenport Democrat and Leader 16 Apr 1919 both list Corporal Ivan J Bales, from Braddyville. Killed in Action in the Vosges Sector
