Andrew Jackson "Jack" Carter was the second child born to Henry Kane Carter and Amanda Jane Taylor Carter Fain. He was born and grew up in Pumpkin Valley, near Eidson, Hawkins County, TN. He was an eighth generation descendant of Captain Thomas Carter, Jr., who migrated from England to Lancaster County, VA in the mid 1600s. He was the brother of Cicero Carter and Ida Carter Sizemore

Jack Carter married LouVerna Manis (b. 24 March 1885, d. 29 July 1944) on August 18, 1901 in Hawkins County, TN. He was baptised and became a member of Beech Hill Primitive Baptist Church which was in the Hancock County portion of Pumpkin Valley on 15 May 1908. He was a farmer and a preacher for most of his adult life and was both the preacher and moderator beginning in 1925 for the Beech Hill Primitive Baptist Church.

He and LouVerna were the parents of ten children:

Mandy Elizabeth Carter Jones b. 20 March 1903 d. 12 June 1972.
Ora Mazella Carter Cook b. 2 Jan. 1901 d. 16 April 2002.
Eva Marie Carter b. 27 May 1907, d. 18 May 1991.
Loranza Dow Carter b. 1909, d. 1920 Clifton, SC.
Jess B. Carter b. 16 Sept. 1911, d. 16 July 1996.
Curtis Carter b. 1913, d. about 1915.
Sarah Ellen Carter b. 15 March 1916, d. 5 Dec. 1980.
Rev. Willard Harvey Carter b. 15 Sept. 1918, d. 4 Aug. 2013.
Lillian Betty Carter Gibson b. 29 Dec. 1921, d. 5 Mar. 1987.
Bertha Inez Carter Nelson b. 15 Nov. 1925, d. 5 Jan. 2011.

In an effort to make money to support the family farm in Pumpkin Valley, the family moved around to follow work which was common at the time. In 1919 they moved to Clifton, SC to work in the cotton mills that were springing up all over the southern USA and that is where their child Loranza Dow Carter died and was buried. They also lived for awhile in Kingsport, TN during the 1920s while the older family members worked at the Borden Mill cotton mill which was of the area's largest employers at the time before Tennessee Eastman expanded.

Jack spent his later years still preaching the Gospel and was widely known and respected in the area. His son Willard followed him into the ministry. He was loved by all who knew him.

He along with his wife are buried in the old Jones Cemetery which is immediately across the Hancock County line in Pumpkin Valley. It is located just inside the woods across a field on the left side of the road.

Inscription

LouVerna's name was misspelled on the marker.
When she died, the family decided to have both LouVerna and Jack's headstone place at the graveside, to save money. They left the last two digits of Jack's headstone blank, since he was still alive at the time. After Jack died, to save money, two of his sons, Willard and Jess, tried to carve the last two digits (58) in the headstone themselves. You can't see the 58 in a photo, but it is carved in, albeit not as nice as a professional stone carver would have done.
