Son of William and Margaret Stanford. An Accountant before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force on 18 February 1916, he embarked as a Private from Melbourne with the 17th Reinforcements, 5th Battalion, on HMAT "Euripides" (A14) on 4 April 1916. He died of bronchi pneumonia at the 7th Stationary Hospital, France, aged 33 years.
Awarded the Meritorious Service Medal - Fifth Supplement, No. 31370 to the London Gazette, 3rd June, 1919.
