Born 01 Jun 1891, in I believe, Evansville, Indiana. Joined the Navy in 1909, at age 17, being assigned to the USS Connecticut. In 1911, he was transferred to the USS Massachusetts, as a bluejacket. Discharged in 1912. Later in 1917, he re-enlisted with Co F, 111th Engineers, 36th Division in Ft Worth, Texas. July of 1918, he sailed to France. He was in France for several months when he and another soldier, Corporal Kuper, went on a souvenir hunting expedition. Capt O L Welch of Co F, 111th Engineers, wrote in a letter that Kuper and Cheaney went "over the top" with some infantrymen. Cheaney was killed and Kuper was shot in the knee by a machine gun, then taken prisoner. Research shows Kuper was taken to a German hospital and released Dec 1918. A later investigation of Cheaney's death, began with Kuper, who they believed had more information on the death of Cheaney. Kuper was reported to have gone to a hospital in Chicago after his release from the German Hospital but an attempt to find him was never successful.
