Robert Lee Eckard was the seventh of nine children of Newton W. Eckard, a North Carolina farmer. His mother, Mary M. Huffman Eckard, was Newton's second wife and died when Robert was a toddler, hence a stepmother is the only mother he knew. He was not well education and most of his skills pertained to farming. He had a German heritage and his family attended the Lutheran Church. Robert descended from at least three American patriots, which fought in the Revolutionary War before migrating to North Carolina: John Miller, Martin Huffman, and Martin Eckert. The family farmed that North Carolina land for generations. Several of Robert's older brothers, who were married, also registered for WWI. After Robert was KIA, his father died the next Christmas Eve .
