Boston Herald, 17 Dec 1918: "Lt George Meehan, one of Charlestown's favourite sons and well known as one of the best long distance swimmers in the country, has paid the supreme penalty in the great war. The news of his death came as a shock to his numerous friends. No athlete in this section ever enjoyed greater popularity than handsome George. He contributed to the amateur record book by winning the treacherous Battery to Sandy Hook swim a few years ago from the classiest collection of natters that ever participated in an open water distance event. His loss is a severe one, and the Brookline Swimming Club, of which he was a member, is sure to place a gold star on it service flag in his memory."
