His name on his headstone shows "Paul A. Sturgis", however Delaware State Archives has him listed as "Avery Paul Sturgis" and that info was from his parents in 1946.

Avery, who resided at 600 Lincoln Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant with Company E, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on January 17, 1944 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted as being employed as a Driver and also as being Married.

He was "Killed In Action" in Luxembourg during the war.

He had served in the Army for ten months at the time of his death. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
