Entered service from Missouri

Corporal, 2nd Engineer Regiment, 2nd Division, U.S. Army, American Expeditionary Force, World War I
=====
Born in 1892 at Barrhead, Renfrewshire in Scotland, William was the youngest of five sons (and seven daughters) born to William Fleming a limestone quarry foreman and his wife Mary Bryce. William’s great-grandparents William Fleming & Isabella Stirling came from East Kilbride and farmed 100 acres at Stewartfield in Lanarkshire while his grandfather Robert and later his father William were quarrymen at the lime works in Barrhead.

In 1912, age 20, after graduating school William joined his eldest brother Robert and sisters Isabella and Mary in America staying with Mary in St Joseph, Missouri. He became an American citizen and started working for the railroad company C.B.&Q. At enlistment in April 1917 he was a section head for CRI&P Railway in Cuba, Republic Co., Kansas
.
William was sent to El Paso, Texas for his training and then to France in September 1917. In the Belleville newspaper archive, The Cuba Daylight featured his passing front page, 20 June 1918 with the above image and biography. The Belleville Telescope reported a week later, “the citizens of Cuba and vicinity honored the memory of Corporal William Fleming who died in action in France June 7th. At the band concert last Thursday evening the band played “Taps” as they unfurled a service flag with a gold star in it in honor of Corporal Fleming.”
