Husband of Harriet Louis Hickman who resided in Lake Milton, Ohio.

James served as a Corporal & Radio Operator on C-47 #41-18661, 21st Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 23, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the mechanical treatment of metals and also as Married.

C-47 #41-18661 took off, with a crew of 4 and 1 passenger, from Dobodura Airfield, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea on a cargo mission to Port Moresby, National Capital District, Papua New Guinea.

They crashed, for an unknown reason, near Lake Myola, Central Province, Papua New Guinea. There is some indications that they may have been shot down by Japanese forces in the area.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal, and the Purple Heart.
