He was a member of the 26th Cavalry Regiment, Scout Car Platoon. The Scout Car Platoon was responsible for the transportation of men and supplies using armored cars and trucks.

When war came to the Philippines on 08 December 1941 His platoon became part of the Bataan Defense force and were assigned to Layac Junction. It was one of the first lines of defense against Japanese ground forces on Bataan.

Early on 07 January 1942, the Scout Car Platoon departed from Layac Junction and was ambushed soon after, at the nearby village of Culis. His convoy was hit by mortar shells. 1st Lt. Cahoon and one other American officer went missing during the action. Their remains were not located following the incident.

After the war American remains were recovered in this area but could not be positively identified and were buried as "Unknowns" at the Manila American Cemetery. 1st Lt. Cahoon could be one of the 3,744 "Unknown but to God" buried in the cemetery.
