After he completed high school, he attended the University of Michigan, East Lansing, graduating on 14 June, 1941, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education prior to his enlistment.
He enlisted in Detroit, Michigan on 14 June, 1941 as a 2LT in the US Army Field Artillery; Later, he transferred to the Army Air Corp and was assigned as a Navigator; He was promoted to 1LT in June, 1942, then to Captain on 24 April, 1944.
Records indicate that the plane he was a crewmember on, was shot down over the Pacific on 7 June, 1944 and he was listed as Missing in Action. Eventually, he was declared Killed in Action on 9 February, 1946
