Sgt. Fielder Turret Gunner Killed, Italy
Nineteen Year Old Boy Loses Life On B-24, November 1

Another Monroe county boy has given his life for freedom's cause, it was learned here this morning when the mother received the customary War Department telegram. Staff Sergeant Chaucey Wier Fielder, a turret gunner on a B-24 was killed in Italy on November 1st, the telegram advised. He was the son of Mrs. Olive Fielder, 506 South High Street. The father, G. Edgar Fielder, a well known farmer of the South Union community, died in 1938.

Staff Sergeant Fielder was born in this county on September 10, 1925 and was a little more than 19 years of age at death. He attended Bloomington high school and would have been graduated with the class of 1945. He became interested in flying and took the aviation cadet mental screening test offered here by the Civil Air Patrol, successfully passed it, and was called as an enlistee on October 19, 1943. He was last home in August of this year just before leaving for overseas duty. When last heard from by his mother, he indicated that he was near Naples and Bair in Italy.

In addition to the mother, he is survived by two half-brothers, Leonard Jones of Hammond and Maxwell Koontz, now serving with the engineer [illegible] in New Guinea. Two [illegible] Mrs. Olin Rogers and Mrs. Dayton Rush, both of Bloomington, also survive.
