"Joseph Pennock legally changed his name to Seeley and his descendants continue under name of Seeley." Robert Seeley Descendants; The Sixth Generation Families; page 21. Published 1995 by the Seeley Genealogical Society
"Joseph Pennock, born in 1765, was the son James and Margaret (Seeley) Pennock of New Milford Conn. He was a druggist; for a mistake made by his clerk, which had a fatal result, he assumed the name of his mother, Seeley; this is family tradition. He did, in fact, change his name to Seeley. He lived in Strafford, VT, West Stockbridge, Mass., (where I believe the accident happened), then Athens, NY, where he lived about forty years, and died 1844, being buried there." Hartford Times Genealogical Column; 19 January 1912.
