He was the husband of Mamie Jo Martin Porter. Born in Commerce, Ga., he was the son of the late John Hilyard and Addie Garrison Porter. Mr. Porter served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 in the 3rd Division – 39th field artillery. He managed Stanley's Package Store for 22 years, worked in the maintenance department of Towers East, and was presently employed by Toyota of Easley as a driver. He was an avid hunter and craftsman. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church, where he was a trustee and a deacon, and was a member of the Harold Cunningham Sunday School class.
In addition to his wife of 51 years, he is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha P. and Michael J. Lindsey, of Marietta; a son and daughter-in-law, Cody F. Porter Jr. and Sandra N. Porter, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Lindsey, Victoria and Tristen Porter; a half sister, Marie P. Sharpton; and two half brothers, Sonny Porter and Dennis Porter, all of Georgia. He is predeceased by a stepmother, Dorothy P. Payne; a stepfather, L.R. Nelson; a sister, Faye P. Messer; brothers, William H. Porter and James C. Porter Sr.; and one half sister, Eunice H. Gentry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greenville County Cancer Society, 113 Mills Ave., Greenville, SC 29605; or, to Westside Baptist Church, Building Fund, 611 Richardson St., Simpsonville, SC 29681.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 6:30 to 8, at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 1:30 p.m., in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be at Graceland West Cemetery.
