He was born Dec. 19, 1904, in Friberg Township, the son of Carl and Tillie (Kugler) Shol. He was baptized at Stavanger Lutheran Church and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls and attended rural School District No. 207 in Friberg Township.
He married Pearl Bergan Jan. 13, 1934, in Webster, S.D. He was previously married to Orleans Forsland.
He farmed for a few years in Friberg Township and then was employed at the Red River Milling Flour Co of Fergus Falls from 1928 until 1943. From 1943 to 1946, he owned and operated Walt's Cafe in Fergus Falls. In 1946, he returned to Friberg and began Walt's Auto Repair at Wee Town. Mr. Shol retired in 1988.
He was a member of Stavanger Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl; five daughters, Bette Zins of Royal Oak, Mich., Elayne Carlson of Minneapolis, Audrey Stach of Fergus Falls, Pat Gapen of Coon Rapids and Faye Baylor of Lewistown, 111., a son, Gene Shol of Fergus Falls; three brothers. Cliff of Underwood, Floyd of Erhard and Russ of Fergus Falls; four sisters, Myrtle Bauman of Erhard, Ruby Bachmeier of Minneapolis, and Lillian Staff and Hazel Magdich, both of Fergus Falls; 24 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday from noon to 9 p.m. at the Olson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls, with a family service at 7 p.m. Visitation wiil resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
