This monument commemorates the participation of the 124th New York State Volunteer Regiment's participation in the Battle of Gettysburg. The Regiment, nicknamed the "Orange Blossoms" for Orange County, drew enough volunteers to fill ten companies. Five of the Regiment's members were awarded Medals of Honor for their gallantry during the Civil War.

Two months after sustaining heavy losses at Chancellorsville, the Regiment joined the battle at Gettysburg. Over the course of those three days, the Regiment lost 28 men killed, 57 wounded, and 5 missing. Among those killed was Colonel Augustus van Horne Ellis, a resident of New Windsor, Orange County, New York who enlisted the regiment. His example of calm courage under fire inspired the incorporation of his statue as the pinnacle of the monument.

The monument is on Houck's Ridge (Sickles Avenue at latitude:
39.7923775 and longitude: 77.2422714) overlooking the Regiment's position at the place called "Devil's Den". Created by the 124th's Regimental Association.

There is another Gettysburg monument for the regiment, 124th New York State Monument for the 3rd Day.
