Joseph Lawrence figures he has travelled a million miles by railroad in his 100 years on earth. Lawrence, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday with a big party, cake and candles and out-of- own relatives, lives with his sister- in-law, Eunice Russell, at 339 Chesterfield Ave., and attributes his longevity to her.
"HE INHERITED it," Mrs. Russell said, however. "His aunt put a roof on her house when she was 100." A 43-year employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Lawrence grew up in North Vernon, Ind., where his father was an attorney and mayor. "When I was 14, my father sent me to Cincinnati to study shorthand," Lawrence recalled, "and when I came back, many had never seen shorthand."
HE SAID his father was so proud of the son's new skill that he showed him off around the town. "My father was elated because I could take shorthand, and told Mr. Adams, the shoe store owner about it." The merchant asked, "What is shorthand?", and young Lawrence was able to demonstrate it, making a good impression on his father's friend.
CLERICAL WORK was not destined to be Lawrence's life work, however. A few years later, he informed his father that he was "leaving and going to do what I want to do." He joined the Pennsylvania Railroad and became a fireman and an engineer.
IN 1904, the Pennsylvania Railroad was asked to carry the Liberty Bell from the World's Fair in St. Louis to Indianapolis, making whistle stops at all the small towns in between. Lawrence remembers how the people flocked around the train to catch a glimpse of the famous bell. Throughout his career, Lawrence kept a record of how many miles he travelled on the trains.
"I'VE TRAVELLED equal to 50 times around the earth at the equator, and they say that one time is 25,000 miles, he said. "That means I've travelled more than a million miles." Celebration of Lawrence's birthday included a family dinner the night before for out-of-town guests, including his daughter, Thelma Chause of Indianapolis, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Russell said, "This was the first 100th birthday party I'd ever been to, and I expect that we'll see him on a few more birthdays."
