Casualty of the Great War, Edward served with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) 11th Bn. and held the MC (Military Cross)awarded in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.He was killed in action on the Asiago Plateau, Italy, aged 22. He was born into a provincial middle-class family,the son of Thomas Arthur and Edith Mary Brittain, who, at the time of the Final Verification Papers, were living at 10, Oakwood Court, Kensington, London. He was the brother of Vera Brittain, VAD Nurse, pacifist,poetess and author of "Testament of Youth". Edward's schoolfriend was Roland Aubrey Leighton who became Vera's fiance.
