CDR Smith served on the U.S.S. Houston which served as the Flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. In the Battle of the Java Sea the USS Houston was sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait and S.L. Smith was one of the ships company who died in that battle. He was not one of the sailors who was recovered and imprisoned by the Japanese. (The date in the memorial -- 15 December 1945 -- was the date he was officially declared dead after the sailors who survived had been accounted for.) Awarded the Purple Heart.
