TROY ATKINS - Troy Harwood Atkins, age 93, of Columbus, MS, died August 2, 2010, at Regency Hospital at St. Dominic in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 5, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Beam-Ingram officiating and Rev. Anne Russell Bradley assisting. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 4, 2010, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home. Mr. Atkins was born December 14, 1916, in Pickens County, AL, to the late Cecil and Bernice Wright Atkins. He was a lifelong resident of Columbus and was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army in Italy, France, and Germany as part of the Medic Corp. Mr. Atkins worked for the Columbus and Greenville Railroad and Phillips Contracting Company until retirement. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the East Columbus Lions Club and a founding member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by wives Carl D. Atkins and Elizabeth Atkins, brothers, John P. Atkins and Atwell Atkins, and sisters, Ruby Perkins and Alta Sprouse. Survivors include his wfe, Lola Atkins of Columbus, MS, sons, Charles Atkins and his wife, Shirley of Rochester, NY, and William Atkins of Jackson, MS, daughter, Linda DellaValle and her husband, Bill of Jackson, MS, brother, Paul Ed Atkins and his wife, Nina of Miami, FL, grandchildren, Samantha Duquette, Michelle Endsley, and Kimberly Turner, and great grandchildren, William, John, Thomas, and Henry Turner, and Madison and Samantha Endsley. Pallbearers will be Johnny Sprouse, Billy Phillips, Bud Phillips, Matthew Shelton, Danny Westbrook, Robert Sanderson, Michael Sanderson, and Kelly Turner. Honorary pallbearers will be the Stuckenschneider Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church, Seekers Sunday School Class of Wesley United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows, Eddie Perkins, Joe Atkins, Orman Atkins, and Harold Atkins.
