JAMES H. BOICE DIED THURSDAY
_____
Long Illness Fatal to One of Galena’s Pioneer Citizens. Lived Here Fifty Years.
_____
James H. Boice, for fifty years a resident of Galena and for the past thirty-two years engaged in the furniture business here, died at his home, 500 Joplin Street early Thursday morning. Mr. Boyce had been in ill health for the past two years and has been confined to his home for the past several weeks.

Mr. Boice was born in Waverly, Ohio on April 29th, 1863. He came to Kansas with his parents when six years old, going to Fort Scott. In June, 1877, he came to Galena and with his father entered into the mining business. They conducted the first sludge mill ever built on Short Creek. He and his father entered the furniture and undertaking business thirty-two years ago and Mr. Boice continued in that business until the time of his death. For a number of years now, his son, Garner Boice has been associated with him in the store which has become one of the leading establishments of the community.

Mr. Boice is survived by his widow, Emma Garner Boice to whom he was married December 29, 1887; one son, Garner Boice of Galena; two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Thomas and Mrs. R. B. Thomas of Webb City and a cousin, Miss Dell Davidson of Galena.

He was prominent in business and social circles. At the time of his death, he was Vice-president of the Citizens Bank, Treasurer of the city of Galena, and a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, member of the I. O. O. F., Modern Woodman, Woodmen of the World, A. O. U. W., K. P. and B. P. O. Elks Lodges. For many years he was president of the state examining board for embalmers.

Mr. Boice has meant much to the city of Galena and will be greatly missed by the people of this city as he had many friends among all. Much sympathy is extended to the members of his family. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
