Family tradition is that he was the son of John Coop & Nancy (Bates) Coop. Also, brother to John Thomas Jackson Coop, Martha Marelda (Coop)Bigham and Elizabeth Jane (Coop) Wagner.
He came with the Bigham family and others in the fall of 1851 from Bedford County, TN to Bell County, TX. He and James Lambert opened a blacksmith shop in Belton in the 1850's.
He was listed as a member of The Independent Blues in 1859 and was a private in Bob White's Ranging Company in 1860.
James P Coop was in the CSA, 1st Reg, TX Cavalry (McCulloch's 1st Mounted Riflemen) & 8th Battalion, TX Cavalry (Taylor's Battalion, Mounted Rifles).
He never married.
