MARIAN HOLLINGSWORTH, EARLY WWII VOLUNTEER

AMHERST -- Marian Jane Hollingsworth (nee Young), 79, of Amherst, formerly of Huntington and Lorain, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Amherst Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Lorain, and lived in the Huntington area for 12 years before moving to Amherst last November.

Mrs. Hollingsworth was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had been the first woman in Lorain to volunteer to serve in World War II. She also served in the Women's Army Air Corps.

She was a member of Old Stone United Methodist Church, Amherst. She enjoyed bird watching and her dog Candy.

Survivors include her sons David H. Hollingsworth of New London and Daniel R. Hollingsworth of Amherst; daughter, Pamela S. Hollingsworth of Amherst; brothers Robert Young of Lorain, Wesley Young of Amherst; sisters Lois Kreiger of Lorain and Mabel Streat of Vermilion; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold H. Hollingsworth; parents John and Matilda (nee Koleno) Young; and sister, Doris Coleman.

Friends may call Sunday 7 to 9 p.m. at Cowling-Truman Funeral Home, 218 Herrick St., Wellington, where services will be Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Kent Joy, pastor of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Huntington Cemetery.
