How William MCKENNEY died.

Court testimony by a woman named Mary Ellen SPICER, a neighbor and friend of the MCKENNEYS, tells of how he died. When asked when William died, she stated, "He died the day before President PIERCE was inaugurated on the 3rd of March 1853. He fell of the monument." The lawyer asked, "Do you mean the Washington Monument?" "Yes sir; he had come here on a visit to see the inauguration and he went up there and fell off and killed himself." (End of testimony)

"Fatal Fall - Yesterday morning an inquest was held over the body of an unknown white man at the National Monument. He probably had gone to the top of the shaft and attempted to come down by the rope of __wning, and lost his hold, and fell upon ___used for hoisting stone. A stake ___iron hook were driven through his body, tearing away bones and flesh and killing him almost instantly. The verdict ___in accordance with these facts." (The Daily Evening Star, dated 5 March 1853)
