Ralph E. 'Gene' Moss

Aug. 10, 1926 -- July 2, 2005

GALVESTON -- Ralph E. "Gene" Moss, 78, Galveston, our loving husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and friend, went home to the Lord at 1:31 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 10, 1926, at home in Howard County to Elmer and Vada (Kerby) Moss. He was married to Doris (Hullinger) on April 13, 1984. She survives.

He was a 1944 graduate of Clay Township High School. As an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was on his way to the invasion of Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped and the war declared over. He served his remaining military time in Korea and was promoted to staff sergeant because he could type, a skill very much in need, to fill out orders so the remaining troops could be sent back home to their loved ones.

After the war, he began farming then went into the plumbing/heating business with his father-in-law, Darrell (Guy) Amos. Eventually, they went into the water well drilling business. He was known as the H2O Pro with his son, Darrell. He retired as owner of Moss Well Drilling in 1989.

He lived most of his adult life in Galveston and spent his winters in Buttonwood Bay Park of Sebring, Fla. He was a member of Galveston United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge in Galveston, Scottish Rite Valley, Indianapolis, and the Order of the Eastern Star where he was a past Worthy Patron, in Galveston. He was a lifetime member of the Indiana and National Ground Water Associations, a former member of the American Legion, Galveston Lions Club, and the Moose and Elks Club in Kokomo. Some of his favorite hobbies were camping, gardening, fishing, playing cards and helping others with their plumbing problems, usually for free.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; his sister, Betty and husband Ed Bullick, Marion; a brother, Wayne Moss, Kokomo; sons, Bruce and wife Lori Moss, Noblesville, and Kent and wife Tina Moss, Galveston; a daughter, Teresa Martin, Ft. Wayne; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Moss, Indianapolis; and a sister-in-law, Connie Townsend and husband Rick. Connie lost her parents at an early age and was lovingly raised as a second daughter. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Dennis Shivley, Walton, Rodger Shively and wife Linda, Bunker Hill, and Pam Grant, Walton. He is also grandpa to 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Patricia (Amos) Moss, whom he married May 16, 1947. He was also preceded in death by one son, Darrell Moss; his sisters, Elsie Gearhart and Mary Jackson; and brothers, Hershel and Ray Moss.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Galveston United Methodist Church, 515 S. Maple St., Galveston. The Rev. John Hrynk and Rev. Warren Purcell will officiate. Burial will be in Galveston Cemetery, Galveston. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Murray-Weaver Funeral Home, 401 S. California St., Galveston, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m., and one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Galveston United Methodist Church or the Guardian Angel Hospice, Inc. of Kokomo.
