Samuel served as a Corporal with the 1st Delaware Infantry, Company K during the Civil War.

He was wounded in the back in the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg on September 17th 1862 and recovered from that wound.

Samuel was later "Killed In Action" in the battle of Chancellorsville during the war.
