Was blind in both eyes at time of death. Family story is that he lost one eye to a piece of straw while thrashing, the other eye from a fence wire breaking and snapping into his face. The farm had ropes set up from house to out house fro his needed travels.He came to America in 1862.
Settled in Freeport Illinios and married Mary Goetting on 1-15-1864 in Freeport. US cit, in 1867.came to Iowa in 1876.Said he walked from Freeport to the family farm, just to see it and then returned to gather his family and belongings, Had eleven children with Mary. Mary passed away in 1892, Fred married Etta Menke same year.
