Hope Wheeler was born in Otisco, IN in 1880. He was the son of Francis and Florence (Jasper) Wheeler. The family moved to a farm east of Marshall, TX in 1888. He graduated from Marshall High School, attended Fort Worth University. Hope Wheeler married Claudia Pennington in 1907. In 1908 he bought a newspaper printing plant and founded a newspaper in Arkansas. Mr. Wheeler worked as an organizer and lecturer for the Farmers' Union and served as Army YMCA Secretary in El Paso, TX during WWI. After the war he served as Educational/Vocational Director of El Paso YMCA helping returning soldiers secure employment.
Mr. Wheeler founded The Arlington Citizen newspaper in 1934, several other weekly newspapers and had a radio program "The Country Editor". He ran for Governor of Texas and Congressman.
