After the death of his brother Joseph Warne, he married Joseph's widow, Margaret "Peggy" (Vliet) Warne, his sister-in-law. Although, they did not have children together, they raised her children (his nieces and nephews) on the Warne Family Farmstead. His stepson and nephew Elijah Warne was affectionately nicknamed Elijah, Jr. and he assumed the title of Elijah, Sr.
Elijah Warne was a veteran of the American Revolution. He was present at the battles of Trenton, Princeton and Monmouth.
