"FATAL MISHAP AT STAMFORD"
TAYLOR COUNTAIN STRUCK BY AUTO KILLED INSTANTLY

WALTER OWENS
STAMFORD, AUG 30--Walter Owens, 58, resident of Elm Grove community in Taylor County, was killed instantly early tonight when he stepped into the path of an automobile as he attempted to cross the highway in front of the machine, three miles north of here. The accident occurred as Owen and a cousin he was visiting, Mrs. G. W. Wiggins started from the filling station she operates to her home across the highway, about 8:15. Mrs. Wiggins told Police Chief George Flournoy, who investigated the mishap, that she and Owens saw the oncoming car, that she stepped back and he darted out in an attempt to cross the road in front of the automobile. He hit the side of the car, she said. The auto was driven by Raymond Swenson, who was accompanied by Johnny Lyons, both of Stamford. They stopped immdeiately, and Swenson called an ambulance. Owen was dead when the ambulance arrived at the Stamford sanitarium and physicians said death had been instantaneous. The body was taken to the Kinney Funeral Home until funeral arrangements are completed.
Swenson brought Flournoy to the scene, and after an investigation the chief of police declared the accident to be unavoidable.
Native of Tennessee, Owen had resided in Texas for many years, and had worked on ranches. He was well known in the southwestern Taylor County community where he made his home. He had been visiting Mrs. Wiggins for the past two weeks.
His wife has been dead for several years. Two daughters, one in California, another in Arizona, survive. Others survivors include two cousins, Mrs. A. J. Conklin of Abilene and Mrs. P. F. Harris of Taylor county, who came here tonight; a brother Oscar Owen of Stanton, a brother-in-law, Morris Smith of Snyder, and John Adkins of Elm Grove. All were notified of the accident.
