Elizabeth was the youngest daughter of Donald and Anna Chisholm, of Mckeesport, Pennsylvania. A 1901 McKeesport City Directory listed her occupation as bookkeeper at Chisholm Heating and Plumbing, her father's company, in McKeesport.

The 1920 U.S. Census found Robert J. and Elizabeth M. Barbour living in Denver, Colorado, where Robert listed his occupation as "Importer, Japanese Art Goods".

The 1930 U.S. Census lists Robert J. Barbour as a poultry farmer in Chesterfield County Virginia, living with his wife Elizabeth.

Robert J. Barbour passed away in Richmond, Virginia, in 1934. His wife Elizabeth continued to live in Richmond until her death in 1961.
