Isaac was the 8th and last child born to Ephraim and Esther Tibbetts Leighton. His siblings: Stephen, Henry Tibbetts, Ephraim Jr, Susan, Esther, Charlotte and Anna B. He learned brickmasonry as a youth.

Isaac married Permelia Lancaster (daughter of Elihu Lancaster and Sally Tuck of Corinna, Maine) on July 4, 1837 and after settling for a short time in Cattaraugus County, New York [his older brother Henry lived there], he, along with friends, Ezra Bradford and the Carrs, became pioneer settlers in Lime Creek Twp, Washington Co., Iowa.

Isaac purchased 40 acres from the government on March 1, 1850 located southwest of Wellman, Iowa. He made a living by farming and raising livestock.

He and Permelia were parents of 7 children; two were born in Maine, one in New York, and the rest in Iowa: Charlotte Bradford; Stephen Tibbetts; Mariam Jordan; Lyman C. [1847-1852]; Alice Jane; Ezra L [1853-1853]; and Delphina Ann.

Gravesite Details this is the west face of the stone, a decoration is missing from the top. Photos from the 1970s show the top missing at that time too.
