Mr. Hanshew was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a Private in Company G, 8th Indiana Cavalry.

j. R. HANSCHEW PASSED AWAY. Another Pioneer Answered Call After a Lingering Illness.LIVED HERE FOR MANY YEARS.
James R. Hanschew, better known throughout the city as "Uncle Jimmy" Hanschew, passed away at 9:30 o'clock last evening at his home, 111 North Anderson street, where he had been failing rapidly for the past several days. The deceased was one of the best known elderly men of the city and the death will be deeply felt by a great circle of friends and relatives.
The deceased was bor in Rush county, June 10, 1840 and would sooon have celebrated his 76th birthday. He came to Madison county at the age of 16 years, being at that time a stalwarth lad who could easily do the work of a man. He began working on a farm and his entire life since then hasd been spent in and around
Elwood. On October 23, 1861 he was married to Miss Martha Clymer and to their union was born six children: Mrs. B. B. McFarland, of Kansas; Mrs. S. K. Taylor, Muncie; Mrs. Lucetta Wilson, Jesse L. Hanschew and Mrs. W. W. Roe, of this city. Two brothers, George of this city and W. S. Hanschew, of New Castle; six grandchildren and four great grand children also survive him.
Retired 14 Years Ago.
Fourteen years ago the deceased retired from active life after many years of hard work on the farm and since then he has made his home in Elwood. He was a man noted for his honesty and square dealings with everyone and he was held in the highest respect by all who knew him.
The remains will lie in state at the home Saturday afternoon between the hours of 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 in the evening and friends are asked to call at that time to pay their last respects. Because of relatives living at a distance from whom word had not yet been received, the hour for the funeral cannot be announced until tomorrow.

The funeral of the late James R. Hanschew who died Thursday evening at his home on North Anderson St., will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Hillis L. Avery of the M.P. church in charge. Owing to the illness of Mrs. Hanschew, only the relatives and close friends of the family will attend. Interment will follow in the city Cem. (March 25, 1916)

Mr. Hanschew was also a veteran of the Civil War.
