Son of James Stephens Bulloch & Martha Stewart {widow Mrs. John Elliott}; born at Roswell, Georgia USA; following the death of his father, the family left Georgia & moved to Philadelphia, USA to live w/ his mother's daughter & her family; in 1856, Irvine moved to New York City, USA to live w/ his sister, Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Sr.; at the outbreak of the American Civil War, Irvine left New York City & returned to Georgia and joined the Confederate Navy, serving onboard the famous "C. S. S. Alabama" which was sunk at Cherbourg, France, on 19 June 1864; later served onboard the "C. S. S. Shenandoah" on its cruise to the Berings Straits between Alaska & Siberia to hunt down Yankee whaling ships; after the war, he settled in Liverpool, England, where he was a cotton broker; he married Ella Clitz Sears, an American woman living in Liverpool, in 1873; he was uncle to U. S. President Theodore Roosevelt {1901-1909} and great-uncle to U. S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt {1933-1945}.
