Cyrus Buell was born to Samuel and Sarah (Holmes) Buell. His nephew Elias Buell wrote that on Oct 9 1780, Cyrus was sent from Fort Ann to scout, and crossed the trail of an army, which he reported. His father Samuel left to warn settlers to come to the fort. The next day, the fort surrendered to a force of 500 British soldiers, and Cyrus was taken prisoner to Montreal and Quebec until the spring of 1783. When discharged, he found his father and family ready to move to the Susquahannah River. There they stayed until 1792, when with the Hulles and Coles, they moved to the"famed Genesee country". Cyrus married Sarah Hull in October 1791.
