Carthage Marine Killed in Viet Nam

Carthage, March 26. - Pfc. William Blanchard, 26, Carthage native and member of the marine corps, was killed at Quang Ngai, Viet Nam, Monday by a gunshot wound in the neck, while engaging "hostile forces." Arrangements are with the Bossuot funeral home. The body will be accompanied here by his brother, Morris, who is also serving in Viet Nam. The body is expected to arrive next week. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Surviving, besides his brother, are his mother, Mrs. Helen Meeks Blanchard, Syracuse; his wife, Mrs. Betty Carol Gagnon Blanchard; two sisters, Mrs. Douglas (Virginia) Walts and Mrs. Paul (Marilyn) Stevens, both of Syracuse; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Morton (Elizabeth) Blanchard, Copenhagen; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Meeks, Ogdensburg; nieces and nephews. His father, Morton H. Blanchard, died Oct. 24, 1965. Private Blanchard was born in Carthage Sept. 26, 1939. He attended schools in Carthage and Syracuse. He was serving his second enlistment and was in his eight year with the marine corps, having enlisted in Syracuse. He married Miss Betty C. Gagnon in Durham, N.C., June 25, 1960. Services Listed Friday For Pfc. Blanchard, 26
CARTHAGE - Services for Pfc. William Blanchard, 26, who was killed in Viet Nam, will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Bossuot Funeral Home, the Rev. Roger E. Purdy, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.
A detachment of Marines from Syracuse will conduct military rites at the Fairview Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
The body of Pfc. Blanchard was accompanied to Carthage by his brother, Morris Blanchard Jr., also a Marine serving in Viet Nam.
Pfc.Blanchard was born in Carthage. He was the son of Mrs. Helen Meeks Blanchard and the late Morton Blanchard. Educated in Carthage and Syracuse, he was in his eighth year and second enlistment in the Marines.
He was married June 23, 1960, in Durhamville, N.C., to the former Betty C. Gagnon.
Surviving besides his mother, of Syracuse; his wife and his brother, are two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Walts and Mrs. Marilyn Stevens of Syracuse; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Blanchard of Copenhagen and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Meeks of Ogdensburg.
