daughter of George Stivner and Loda Marie Luke.

George and Loda Stivender lived in Johnsons Bayou, LA in 1886 during the hurricane of Oct 12. They were living there with 6 children. The oldest child, Adalaide, who was 11 at the time, told this story to her descendants: "As the storm started getting bad, they took shelter in the big cotton house. When the wind came up, they all climbed on top of the cotton bales. They heard the southeast corner of the building popping and they knew it was about to go. The building blew apart and the storm surge, which was about 7 to 8 feet, carried off her brothers and sisters who all drowned except for 1 Dora. The only reason Adalaide survived was that her hair caught in the limbs of a tree and held her fast. Both parents, George and Loda survived.
