Charles served in the Civil War. He enlisted as a private on 20 May 1861 in Company C, 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (Grant County Grays) which was part of the Iron Brigade.

Charles A. Garvin enlisted May 20th 1861 at Mt. Hope, Wisconsin. Was mustered into US service June 11th 1861 and was sent direct to Washington D. C.
Was in First Bull Run July 21st and wounded twice, (reported home as killed), on head and right side. Walked back to Washington and was sent to hospital at Georgetown for two weeks.
In 1862 was in Gainsville August 28th, 2nd Bull Run August 30th, South Mountain September 14th and Antietam September 17th where I saved the flags from going down and bore them safely from the field and was promoted next day.
October 27th 1862, took sick and sent to Washington. Later sent on transport to New Port, R.I. and on the return ship was driven by storm off southern coast of Florida and finally back to Washington and to my regiment near Bell Plain, VA for winter quarters December 30th a862 missing the battle of Fredricksburg.
April 29th 1863 Fitzhughs crossing, Chancellorsville May 3rd. June 12th started from Fredericksburg on the Gettysburg campaign.
Gettysburg Battle July 1st 1863. Wounded in both thighs, ball passing through back of right thigh. Was sent to Baltimore, was in Jarvis hospital until Feb 25th 1864.
Sent to Washington, transferred to Company H, Veterans Reserve Corps. Done guard duty six weeks, was discharged June 11 in Washington.
Went to Baltimore, found the regiment on their was home. Hd everything I had on shot except shoes and stockings.
Cap, coat, shirt at first Bull Rull. At Antietam, haversack and cartridge box, at Gettysburg, pants, my legs, canteen, knapsack, blanket and portfolio.
