Information from F.A.G. Member #47697501:
Julia Whitted Smith's mother was Mary "Polly" Etheredge. Mary was born in Old Edgefield District (now Saluda Co., S.C.), daughter of Henry Etheredge and Jemima Whaley. Her Saluda family only remembered she married a "Whitehead" and died in Alabama. I researched this and found Mary, her sister Sarah and Julia most likely were sent by their father, Henry Etheredge from what is now Saluda County, S.C. (then Edgefield District) to school and board and met their husbands. Mary was the 2nd wife of Gideon Whitted and her sister Sarah, married Newton Franklin. All were living near Fairfield/Chester District in 1820. However, Sarah returned home after Newton Franklin's death and married 2nd Nathaniel Corley, Esquire of the Edgefield Dist., S.C. (now Saluda County). F.A.G. does not have a place to put what was the original names were in S.C. at the time of their births or deaths. Saluda County was not formed until 1895/1896. I hope this is helpful for other descendants of Gideon and Mary "Polly" Etheredge Whitted (Whitehead).
