From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Tuesday, January 20, 1987, p. A19:

Dr. Robert E. Carr Sr., 68, a retired Fort Worth surgeon, died Sunday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at University Christian Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.

Carr was born in Sampson County, N.C., and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1943. He was a battalion surgeon in the 103rd and 45th Infantry Divisions in the Army from 1943 to 1946. Carr received the Bronze Star and Presidential Unit Citation.

He was surgical service chief at the Veterans Administration hospital in Tucson, Ariz., and was a clinical instructor in thoracic surgery at Southwestern Medical School.

Carr moved to Fort Worth in 1957 and practiced thoracic surgery from 1957 until he retired in 1982. He was surgeon in chief at Harris Hospital-Fort Worth Medical Center from 1965 to 1966 and was chief of the surgery division there from 1976 to 1978.

In 1962, Carr was chief surgeon at Fort Worth Children's Hospital and Elmwood Hospital. He also was chief thoracic surgeon at John Peter Smith Hospital and a consultant at five other hospitals.

Carr was a member of more than 25 professional organizations and past president of the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Tuberculosis Society, Texas Thoracic Society, Tarrant County Heart Association, Southern Chapter-American College of Chest Physicians, Fort Worth Surgical Society, North Texas Lung Association, American Lung Association of Texas and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.

He was a member of the board of directors of the North Texas Lung Association, American Lung Association of Texas, Fort Worth-Tarrant County Heart Association and the Fort Worth-Tarrant County chapter of the American Cancer Society.

He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians and Southwest Surgical Congress. He was a founding member of the American Trauma Society and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and a chancellor's associate at Texas Christian University from 1974 to 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Racobs Carr of Fort Worth; two daughters, Betty Jane St. Clair of Dublin, Va., and Nancy Ralston Carr of Fort Worth; one son, Robert E. Carr Jr. of Fort Worth; two sisters, Margaret Anderson of Clinton, N.C., and Lucille Daughtry of Miami, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests that memorial be made to Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C.
