Sometime before 1880, George and his son, Morris, left their home in Vermont to explore mining opportunities in Colorado. The well-known Robbins Gulch was named for Mr. Robbins, one of the earliest settlers in the area. In 1880, he and Morris are living here - within a year of the discovery of valuable ore in the region. His wife Abbie remained at the home in Newfane, VT, where she raised their other children - twins Alton and Alice, witnessing both their marriages in 1881.

Mr. Robbins was born in Windham Co., VT, on 28 Feb 1826. His parents were Joshua and Lucy (Smith) Robbins, Lucy being Joshua's second wife. George married Abbie Lewis about 1855. During the Civil War, he served for eight months as a sharpshooter in Company H, 2nd Vermont Infantry.

George W. Robbins was caught in a landslide at the Legal Tender Mine in Tomichi, Gunnison Co., CO, on July Fourth, 1883. The slide broke both bones in his left leg and caused severe lacerations. Despite the doctor's efforts, Mr. Robbins died in nearby White Pine, where he received the best care available. The funeral was held on 13 July 1883 and was well-attended by residents from throughout the area. The remains were interred in the Tomichi cemetery.
