Bruno Vinet Souligny was born at Ste. Martine, P.Q., Canada in October, 1836. He came to Kankakee, IL in 1853, where he joined his godfather, Prudent Vinette. He remained 2 yrs . in Kankakee, where he met a man who had just returned from a trip up the Chippewa River and who told about the timber up near the falls. He left Kankakee in the summer of 1855. They came by rail to Chicago, then by stage to the Mississippi River and by boat up the Mississippi to Read's Landing, and from there by stage and afoot to Chippewa Falls, arriving in the middle of October, 1855. He ran rafts down the river and later on drove the stage to Durand, WI. Mr. Vinette was married the first time to Miss Rosalie Blanchard, daughter of Edward Blanchard, in 1857. Their Marriage Certificate was handwritten on a sheet of paper, written and signed by a County Judge of Chippewa County. It states that Bruno made an oath that there was no legal impediment to this marriage. Both parties were from the Town of Lafayette at the time and mutually consented. Bruno told of how, when his wife's mother died, he was the only one owning a sleigh and team of horses and which were used to convey her body to its last resting place. Rosalie died in 1876. The couple had had 9 children, only 2 of whom lived to adulthood.

Bruno was was one of the first members of the parish of Notre Dame when the first Mass was celebrated in the winter of 1857. In 1876 he married his 2nd wife, Mary Laura Lupier. They had 2 children, but only one lived to be an adult. Mary died in 1915.

Bruno was admitted to US as a citizen in June, 1880.

Article taken from the "Golden Anniversary Year Book of Rusk County": Bruno owned some 400 acres on either side of the river, including what is now 'Brooklyn', a part of present-day Ladysmith, and the Country Club's golf ground. He established a hotel and stopping place after receiving a land grant from the US Government. It was undoubtedly the first building near what is today Ladysmith. Ferry service was provided and a bridge later spanned the Flambeau River at the Vinette fords, but an ice jam took it out in about 1910.

Bruno was 80 yrs. old at time of his 3rd marriage to Rose Bilodeau who was 66.

Bruno died of Carcinoma of Stomach, age 86.

Bruno was one of the last contractors to quit when the saw mills shut down. His last contract was in Minnesota on northern shore of Lake Superior. It was for the Weyerhauser Corp. For many years he farmed in Eagle Point.
