The son of Young Gaines Lipscomb and Mary L. Cocke Lipscomb.
---------------------------
James Cocke Lipscomb could not have been born in 1842. His death certificate contains an error, as then sometimes do. According to other available records, James was born in 1852 after his parents married in 1851.
Mary L. Cocke was still married to Thomas Bates in 1842. Thomas did not die until 9 Dec 1848.
Since Mary Cocke Bates married Young Gaines Lipscomb on 9 Oct 1851, and Young is listed as the father of James Cocke Lipscomb, (born in Washington Co., TX where Mary and James lived), it follow that James was born sometime AFTER 1851.
The 1870 and 1880 census records both list James Lipscomb as being born in 1852, as does his gravestone. Somewhere along the way, confusion arose in the family about James' true birthdate, and they thought he was 10 years older than he really was. That's why there is incorrect information given on his death certificate AND in the newspaper article. James wasn't 92 when he died, he was 82.
I am related to Thomas Bates, the first husband of Mary Cocke Lipscomb. Thank you, in advance, for helping me correct the confusion surrounding the birthdate of James Lipscomb and for editing the information on his memorial page.
