Professional baseball team owner, manager, and league executive. After graduating from Lafayette College in 1869, McNight helped form the Allegheny Base Ball Club in 1876. The team joined the International Association of Professional Base Ball Players in 1877 with McKnight as manager. He also served as the league's president until both the IA and the Alleghenys folded in 1878. In November 1881, he led the formation of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys (now Pittsburgh Pirates) franchise of the newly established American Association, with McNight named the league's first president. He was replaced by Wheeler C. Wyckoff as the AA's president in 1886. McNight served as the Allgheny's team president until 1884, managed the team for 12 games that same season, and as principal owner of Pittsburgh until 1886, when new owner/president William A. Nimick moved the club to the National League.
