Newton was in the 147th Infantry Company E. As a civilian he was a farmer. Died in Civil War. Died of fever in hospital at Windmill Point, Fredricksburg, Virginia. Buried in grave number 6030.
Newton wrote the following letter to William Hood in Syracuse, New York, who he called "Cousin William." (Letter to Mr. William H. Hood, Syracuse, NY from Newton Ehle in "Falmuth," December 23, 1862) The original letter was in a small yellow envelop. The letter reads:
"Dear Sir - I rec'd letter from Emily the other day - She said she was going down home to stay this winter - Give my love to all - Hoping to hear from you again soon - I remain your devoted, most respected Humble Servent & Cousin."
Newton died several months after writing the above letter.
