Lewis served as a Private with the 3rd Delaware Infantry, Company B during the Civil War. In some military records his first name is spelled "Louis".

He enlisted in the 3rd Delaware on December 31, 1861 in Georgetown, Delaware for a 3 year term.

Lewis "Died Of Disease" at the General Hospital, Wilmington, Delaware during the war. It was noted that his remains were turned over to his brother.
