He was born to the parents of James Estell Maden Sr and Emma Virginia Swan. While in his senior year in high school, he needed a tutor, and met Lillian Fisher Benson, a teacher who did tutoring on the side, and she helped him finish high school. They were married in Knoxville, Tennessee on 11 September 1930. They had two children: Carol Emma Maden and James Estell Maden III. He worked for the Corps of Engineers, in the Delaware Division of the Civil Works Department, helping to maintain the bridges over the Delaware Cheasapeake Canal. They were estranged for a number of years, but reconciled about ten years before their deaths. He is buried in the Delaware City Cemetery, next to his parents.
